Tom does what he does – in one word – for JUSTICE.
As a child, my parents called themselves Catholic, but very seldom went to church, so I very rarely went to church. However, I would spend many weekends while growing up with my Uncle John and Aunt Billie. It was with them, in their little country Church where I heard about and learned about Jesus.
My attention first turned towards the orphan when my Pastor in Buffalo, NY was very involved in the Pro-Life movement in the late 1980’s. And he taught us as a congregation to be “doers of the word”. One Sunday, my wife Linda and I were doing an informational picket on a street corner (not in front of an abortion clinic). A car pulled up in front of us, and a young lady rolled down her window and said: “If I keep my baby, will you be there for me? Will your church be there for me?”
My wife and I put down our signs, and walked away.
We knew from that moment there had to be more to Pro-Life than holding up a sign. We knew then that we had to be involved in ministering to “the orphan, the widow and the stranger”. For the last 20+ years we have been ministering to “the orphan, the widow and the stranger” through our involvement in orphan care and caring for young women who have an unplanned pregnancy.
The biggest obstacle to overcome was that we were Christians who were making pretty good money, and we had to change our lifestyle to go into ministry. At that time in our lives that was difficult and startling to our family and friends who were not Christians.
This session is for you if you’re ready to know how important it is to be “doers of the word” and how important “The Church United” is to this issue.
